Let’s face it, adult life is never without its own unique set of difficulties. For me, 2011 was the year of unwanted challenges. Suffice it to say, I’ve met those challenges head on and overcame them. But more than anything, I’m thrilled to have achieved two terminal degrees – MA and MFA Creative Writing – which I look forward to utilizing in 2012, completed a 60-page thesis titled Found in Translation: Conveying Asian History and Culture in Contemporary Fiction, and finished my first fantasy novel called Blood and Honor.
I’m not big on resolutions, but I’m ready to try. Now that I’m well equipped and capable of writing novels and articles on any given topic, my intention for 2012 is to do just that – write. Just what will I write you ask. Well, for starters, I’ve begun work on the sequel to Blood and Honor, and a new series working title 32 Variations. I intend to blog more often here and over at The Maltese Chronicle (http://themaltesechronicle.wordpress.com), ramp up my search for paid freelance writing work, as well as try to get a part-time teaching position either in the classroom or online. While these may seem like lofty objectives, I continue to live by my guiding principle: If you build it they will come.
This same principle was the driving force behind my then BA Music Performance studies. I’ve proven that following my heart and doing what I enjoy would bring me success in ways I never dreamt possible. In the end, I became a music teacher with the ability to subsidize my lifestyle. I built it and came they did.
One thing that remains constant throughout my life is my dream to live in Europe and travel to places far and wide. For now I’ll have to be content with House Hunters International. But in the meantime, I’ll continue to work on my photography, create adventurous worlds on the written page, and read books by authors whose words transport me into the vast unknown.
While I hang on to the job that pays the bills, I’m still looking forward to 2012 with a new attitude. I don’t expect opportunities to fall into my lap gracefully and I know there’s no success without hard work and sometimes pain. This coming new year though, I hope to forge my own path to the career I want with the intention to continue living respectably, while striving to make a comfortable living.
What are your intentions for 2012? Is it a new career? Moving to a new place? or just creating more time for yourself? Whatever it is, make it worth your while. Here’s wishing a Happy and Prosperous New Year to all my readers.
